I created this Love Never Fails print just for you and just in time for Valentine’s Day. When I was a little girl, it was a BIG deal for each of us kids to memorize and recite all of I Corinthians 13 – King James Version, nonetheless.
The NIV of I Corinthians 13 reads:
If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing.
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
My sister, who happens to be the baby in the family, was always the first to memorize Bible verses and I Corinthians 13 was no exception. She was just a show-off! Or so we used to tell her. Actually, she’s just really good at memorizing things. Me, on the other hand, I want to make sense out of everything and memorizing something just for the sake of memorizing it – what was the purpose of that?! The purpose, I thought, was so my sister could show off her memorization skills.
Don’t get me wrong, I adore my baby sister. There is absolutely no one like her in the entire world! I wouldn’t trade her for anything. Although, my brother and I used to tell her she was adopted. She was blonde haired, blue-eyed and had a fair complexion. My brother and I
have had dark brown hair with darker eyes and complexion. Who was this skinny, blonde-haired child who could memorize Bible verses like nothing and recite them as if they were a part of her everyday vocabulary? And why would she even want to?
I did finally memorize I Corinthians 13 (KJV) and even though I wasn’t quite as eager to do the memorization, it still remains a part of my childhood memories and this scripture holds a special meaning as I can vividly still see my mother sitting in her normal spot in her wheelchair. She had her hands clasped in front of her, with her dark brown eyes wide open and a very proud smile across her face. I stepped out in front of the microphone and recited the whole chapter. I really thought my mom was just going to burst! I was just glad it was over.
