You can really find some great deals on household decor, kitchen cabinets, storage solutions, bedding and even beds and furniture (to name a few things) at IKEA. I know IKEA’s been around for a while now, but I just made my first trip to IKEA not too long ago.

Our Home Story

If you’ve been following along on The Birch Cottage blog, you know that Lenny and I have started a little home remodeling journey that I have chronicled here on the blog as Our Home Story. Our Home Story tells the story of how we are attempting to turn Lenny’s childhood home into our cozy cottage style home.

This is our daughter’s bedroom and the revamping of her bedroom was a surprise for her. See, she’s been on deployment and we wanted to surprise her by having her new room all ready for her when she returned home. So, I couldn’t share the pictures of her room with you without spoiling the surprise.

We bought Kristen a new mattress and bed frame. Her room is small, so we decided to go with a twin sized bed. I had already re-finished the old dresser that was in her room with chalk paint and knew I wanted her new bed to have the same finish. So, we decided to go with the IKEA Tarva bed frame. The IKEA Tarva bed frame comes in unfinished pine.

Lenny put the bed together and I did a nice Walnut stain on the bed frame first. Once the stain dried, I applied my chalk paint, sanding between each layer. I applied about three or four layers of chalk paint. The good think about working with chalk paint is that it dries really quickly. It’s kind of a time-consuming task because you have to apply multiple layers and sand in-between each layer. But the buttery smooth finish is just beautiful.

Our daughter, by the way, loved her new room! She also loved her bed. I was afraid it might be a little small as the Tarva bed sits pretty low to the ground and we selected a memory foam mattress, so we didn’t use a box spring. But it was perfect. Using the smaller bed meant more open space in the room. After being confined to a small berthing area on the USS Essex for seven months, her room felt grand and spacious.

I’ll be sharing more pictures with you soon of our daughter’s bedroom makeover. But, for now, this is a look at an IKEA Tarva bed frame hack and we just love the results. More importantly, our daughter loved the results! {By the way, this is not a sponsored post.}

Til next time…
