FAQs
Q: Can I make a skinny Christmas tree?
Yes! If you want to make a skinny Christmas tree, simply start with a narrower base. For example, for the medium tree, you could make it 5" wide at the base and still keep it 8-¼" tall.
Q. What fabrics work best for the fabric Christmas trees?
You'll want to steer away from lightweight or sheer fabrics, unless you use a heavier fabric for a lining. I had great results with quilter's cotton, flannel, and wool. Oh, and you'll also want to use fabrics that don't fray easily.
Q. Do I have to use rick rack?
No! You can leave your Christmas trees plain or embellish them any way you want. Some other ideas:
- bells
- buttons
- lace
- pom poms

Instructions
Sew the Fabric Christmas Tree
- With your fabric wrong sides together, cut out two pieces of fabric for your Christmas tree. You can use my provided pattern or use your own.
- Place the fabric pieces right sides together. Using a ¼" seam allowance and leaving a 2" opening in the middle of the bottom of the tree, stitch along the bottom, up and down the sides, and back along the bottom. Again, be sure to leave an opening for turning and stuffing the tree.
- Clip the corners and turn the tree right side out.
- Stuff the tree with polyester fiber fill until you've reached the desired fullness.
- Add any decorative elements to your Christmas tree. I used craft glue to affix the rick rack to my trees and I sewed the snowflake buttons on using a needle and thread.
- Use a needle and thread or glue to close most of the opening in the bottom of the Christmas tree. You will still want to leave an opening large enough to insert your dowel rod.
Prepare the Dowel Rod and Wood Slice
- Cut the dowel rod to the length you want. You'll want the rod to be long enough to insert into and support the tree. I cut my rods 3" for the small tree, 4" for the medium tree and 5" for the large tree.
- Cut your wood slice (or buy precut wood slices) with a miter saw. I cut my wood slices 3" and 4" wide.
- Drill a hole in your wood slice using a drill and drill bit that is the size of your dowel rod. So, if you're using a ¼" dowel rod, you'll want to use a ¼" drill bit. Find the center of the wood slice and drill a hole part way through.
- Apply glue in the hole and a little along the tip of the dowel rod. Insert the dowel rod into the hole of the wood slice. Wipe off any excess glue with a damp cloth. Allow to dry.
Assemble the Tree
- Slide the Christmas tree onto the dowel rod. You may have to finagle the polyester filling to get the rod inserted up into the tree.
- You can apply glue to the rod to secure it to the tree, but I didn't find it necessary.
- You can also add other decorative elements to the top of the wood slice, like mini packages, holly, pinecones, etc.
