Today, is Independence Day in the good ol’ USA. If you’ve spent much time on my blog, you know that Lenny and I are very proud military parents. We have two sons serving in the Army and a daughter who is currently on deployment somewhere in the Pacific Ocean who serves in the Navy. Holidays such as Independence Day are especially near and dear to our hearts.
As I’ve shared before, each of our three children who chose to enlist, did so for various reasons. No, we didn’t pressure or threaten to make any of them enlist! This Independence Day will be celebrated a little differently by our family. There will be no backyard barbecue, no going to the fireworks and no big get-togethers with family (at least not for Lenny and I).
No, we aren’t boycotting Independence Day. We are simply spread out a little bit this year. Lenny and I are actually in Georgia visiting with our soldier Brandon and his wife, who just so happened to have given birth to twins yesterday. (I’ll tell you more about that later.) Our sailor girl, as I mentioned, is on deployment to the Pacific Ocean region. I received an email message from her this morning telling me that they are having a “steal beach” party on the flight deck of the USS Essex, complete with fireworks. Her goal for the day is to get a little bit of sunshine.
Last year at this time, Lenny and I were fortunate enough to celebrate Independence Day in San Diego, California and actually watched fireworks from the flight deck of the USS Essex. Talk about spectacular! What an incredible treat for us. We were truly honored!
Our other five children are either working or off spending time with their extended families. Lenny and I will still be celebrating Independence Day in our hearts. We are truly grateful for all the sacrifices our young men and women have made and continue to make for this place we call home, for we truly live in the land of the free because of the brave.
Happy Independence Day to you and your family – wherever you are!
Til next time…
