Wondering what to watch on Netflix this summer? Here’s a list of some of the best movies and series now streaming on Netflix!

Summer is, of course, the time to be outdoors enjoying summer-time activities with your family. But, truth be told, my husband and I also enjoy watching “good” movies and series on Netflix.
In fact, we are in the middle of watching the series Designated Survivor. Have you seen it? It stars Kiefer Sutherland as President Tom Kirkman. This series really makes you stop and think. And, if real life is stranger than fiction, it’s downright scary what the future could hold. Watch on NETFLIXMust
Whether you like to watch comedies, dramas, movies or TV series, you’re sure to find something you like to watch in my Summer 2019 round-up of what to watch on NETFLIX.
Summer 2019 Must Watch NETFLIX Movies & Series
So, in no particular order, here are my summer 2019 recommendations for series and movies to watch on NETFLIX.
1. Designated Survivor
Since I already mentioned the series Designated Survivor, of course, I had to start off my must watch NETFLIX list with this drama series. In Designated Survivor, a devastating attack against the US claims the lives of the President and most of his Cabinet. The then HUD Secretary, Tom Kirkman, who was named the designated survivor in case of such a catastrophic event, is suddenly promoted to President of the United States of America. A man of character, integrity, truth and transparency, he struggles to adjust to his new role and to keep his country from going into mass chaos.
A definite “must watch”! Plus, it’s a series so you can watch it an episode at a time.
2. Murder Mystery
I’m not a huge Adam Sandler fan, but I do love Jennifer Aniston. Murder Mystery is a comedic take on the Orient Express. It’s a light-hearted whodunnit with Jennifer and Adam as a husband and wife team who are framed for murder and quickly go on the run (in a corny kind of way) to try and solve the murder mystery.
Light-hearted and fun. I’m glad I watched it and would probably watch it again. You should definitely add this to your must watch NETLFIX movies list.
3. Like Father
Like Father stars Kristen Bell and Kelsey Grammer. Kristen is left at the altar and Kelsey is her estranged father, who she hasn’t seen in years. He shows up just in time to escort her on her honeymoon cruise.
They learn a lot about each other on that cruise and the importance of family.
3. 5 Flights Up
5 Flights Up stars Morgan Freeman and Diane Keeton. After 40 years of marriage and living in the same apartment, they decide to sell their apartment. What I took away from this feel good movie was that this couple loved one another and more than anything, enjoyed spending time together.
By the way, The New York Times does a fantastic job of reviewing this movie and I couldn’t agree more with this review. You can read it here.
4. Our Souls at Night
Another feel good moving about aging adults is Our Souls at Night and stars Robert Redford (Louis) and Jane Fonda (Addie). Addie and Louis are widowed neighbors and they are lonely. To combat their loneliness, they decide to start sleeping together – platonically.
Again, you’ll definitely Want to add this movie to you NETFLIX must watch movies list
5. Julie & Julia
In this heartwarming movie, Amy Adams plays Julie Powell. Julie is looking for a little more meaning in life and decides to spice up her life by making every single recipe in Julia Child’s cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking.
I absolutely love Julie & Julia. I have already watched it three times and I’m ready to watch it again!
6. Mary Poppin’s Returns
I love Mary Poppin’s and although I haven’t actually watched this movie yet, I’m looking forward to watching it. Mary Poppin’s Returns is a new release this summer on NETFLIX.
Mary Poppin’s Returns takes place in 1930’s London. Michael Banks and his three children get some help from his magical childhood nanny.
I’m definitely putting Mary Poppin’s Returns on my Summer Must Watch NETFLIX movies list!
7. Nights in Rodanthe
Another oldie (2008) but a goodie. I never get tired of watching this movie! Nights in Rodanthe stars Richard Gere (Dr. Paul Flanner) and Diane Lane (Adrienne). This movie is based off of the book by the same name by Nicholas Sparks.
Adrienne drives to Rodanthe, North Carolina, to look after a friend’s bed-and-breakfast for the weekend while she’s away. The house is rustic, romantic, and right on the beach, and partially in the surf at high tide.
The only guest for the weekend is Paul, who arrives at the inn with his own emotional baggage. He has flashbacks of a surgery which ended tragically. The family of the patient, who live in Rodanthe, is suing him. The husband wrote to Paul asking to speak to him; this is what brings him to Rodanthe.
A storm moves in and Paul and Adrienne team up to protect the inn. They dine together, share stories, and eventually turn to each other for emotional comfort. A genuine romance is born. With Adrienne’s advice and moral support, Paul opens up to the patient’s widower and in doing so faces his own pain.
8. The King’s Speech
In The King’s Speech, England’s Prince Albert (Colin Firth) must ascend the throne as King George VI, but he has a speech impediment. Knowing that the country needs her husband to be able to communicate effectively, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) hires Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush), an Australian actor and speech therapist, to help him overcome his stammer.
An extraordinary friendship develops between the two men, as Logue uses unconventional means to teach the monarch how to speak with confidence.
I love Colin Firth’s role in this movie. Thus, the reason I’ve included it in this must watch NETFLIX movies list!
9. The Crown
In The Crown, the series begins with an inside look at the early reign of the queen, who ascended the throne at age 25 after the death of her father, King George VI. As the decades pass, personal intrigues, romances, and political rivalries are revealed that played a big role in events that shaped the later years of the 20th century.
I recently discovered that NETFLIX is coming out with Season 3 of The Crown. I can’t wait to watch more of this series! I’m sure I’ll include Season 3 in my next must watch NETFLIX series list!
10. Christopher Robin
Christopher Robin — now a family man living in London — receives a surprise visit from his old childhood pal, Winnie-the-Pooh. With Christopher’s help, Pooh embarks on a journey to find his friends — Tigger, Eeyore, Owl, Piglet, Rabbit, Kanga and Roo. Once reunited, the lovable bear and the gang travel to the big city to help Christopher rediscover the joy of life.
I think this movie is something we should all watch. I think there’s a lesson here that’s meant for all of us, if we’ll only take the time to listen. A must watch NETFLIX movie? You bet!
11. Anne with an “E”
I grew up reading Anne of Green Gables, Little House on the Prairie and Little Women. I was pretty excited when Netflix came out with their Anne with an E series. And more good news, there will be a Season 3!
Anne is a 13-year old who has endured an abusive childhood and is adopted by an aging brother and sister to help out around the farm. They got a lot more than they bargained for with Anne and the talkative redhead soon stole their hearts.
Ditto on the “I’ll add this series to my next must watch NETFLIX series list.”
12. Blacklist
There are currently 5 seasons of Blacklist on NETFLIX. James Spader plays Raymond “Red” Reddington. Red just happens to be on the government’s most wanted list for decades. He decides to join forces with the FBI under the condition that he must work with Agent Elizabeth (Liz) Keen.
Is Red Liz’s father? Are they related in any way? And what about her mother? Oh, then there’s Liz’s husband. Can she trust him? This is a drama within a drama. And definitely worth adding to your summer NETFLIX series watch list.
13. Founder
Michael Keaton stars as Ray Kroc (the founder of McDonald’s). Ray is a salesman through and through and he’s determined to change the way burgers are made and sold.
Based on a true story, you just may learn something new about the founder of McDonald’s restaurants in Founder.
14. Mr. Church
Eddie Murphy plays a “temporary” personal chef to a terminally ill single mother. Mr. Church forms a bond with the single mom and her young daughter that simply redefines the meaning family.
Warning: have your tissues nearby!
15. Saving Mr. Banks
What do you expect from a Disney movie that stars Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson? Characters that are believable and perfectly portrayed? Exactly!
When Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) sets out to purchase the rights to Mary Poppin’s, the author, Pamela Lyndon Travers (Emma Thompson), proves to be a little challenging to win over to his side.
You won’t be disappointed! Go watch Saving Mr. Banks! I’ll still be here and you can come back and tell me how much you enjoyed it. Plus, it just might give you some new insight into Mr. Disney.
